Worldwide, over 150 million people are experiencing homelessness. That number is growing by the minute. Poverty, mental illness, unexpected loss of jobs, natural disasters and wars are the top causes of homelessness around the world.
Homelessness is one of the most complex problems that we are tackling as humans. There will never be one solution to end homelessness, but it is a case by case situation that needs close attention and a lot of resources. It could happen to any of us, and we need to provide protection to those in need.
We believe that everyone deserves warmth, protection and dignity which is why we fight to provide immediate shelter to anyone sleeping outside. Because shelter is a human necessity, and we can’t keep waiting until there is a solution to end homelessness but we have to act now to protect our neighbors sleeping rough tonight.
Warmth is helpful in the realm of physical illness and allergy, in our sense of individual strength and contentment, and in how we live with each other.
If you are caught out in the elements unexpectedly without proper clothes and shelter, hypothermia can set in within minutes to hours.
Homelessness is a disaster, just like any other disaster yet unfortunately, it's one that plays out in slow motion and therefore lacks the attention grabbing power of an event like a hurricane, a flood or an earthquake. Because of its slow motion, size and complexity, it truly is a wicked problem and therefore has to be addressed by unconventional means - this requires a truly innovative idea.
